When jumpstarting a car, does it depleat the other cars battery?

Q) Only asking because my b/f has something wrong with his car battery, it often won't start. He is working away and coming back at the weekends, and every Sunday he has to use jump leads to start his car on the drive, and again at the petrol station after turning the engine off to get petrol. He has a new beetle turbo, and I have a renault clio 1.2. He says it doesn't do damage to my battery but I disagree, can any one clarify? Thanks.

A) If you jump start the car with the engine on the other car turned on, then there is no problem. Ja.

How do you start up a car sales business?

Q) I've visited a few car lots recently and it got me thinking as to how these car traders start up their businesses. I'm not talking about car dealerships, i'm looking to know about the small independent car sellers and how they got going. (This is a UK based question only as i don't live in the USA) Thanks!

A) Speak to your local Business Link for free information on setting up your business. They have information for specific industries as well as general stuff. One of your key things is location. Finding premises on a site where people can see what you have on offer as they drive past and where they have room to park to visit you are important. The other key thing, as with most businesses is marketing. How are you going to compete with everyone else who's doing this? Again, Business Link has good information on this. Good luck!

Is there an import car culture in London? If yes, where is the best place for me to start looking?

Q) It seems like ludacris car insurance charges stop people from modifing their cars too much, but I'm sure a lot of people still do. I'd like to know where these people hook up, as I'd like to get back into car racing again.

A) It's not London, but the MaxPower exhibition is usually held at the NEC in Birmingham in June or July. There are hundreds of Euro nad Asian imports on display there & you could get some club info. Plus it's a fun day!

How long does a car insurance claim take?

Q) My partner crashed his car yesterday into a fence, no one lese involved. He is with Directline fully comp, and hes ringing up first thing this morining. Car is still running so we think it is just body damage, front bumper and lights gone, side and rear dented. How long will it take to be repaired? I have a baby due in 4 weeks, will it be ready by then?

A) If you keep on at them it can be sorted quickly but you will have to do a lot of the running around and phone calls yourself.

Can I attach a car battery to an electric fence wire just by the leads?

Q) The battery pack I got for an electric fence doesn't have room for a car battery in it and it isn't rechargeable. It seems to me more sensible to get a car battery. Can I just attach this to the wire with leads? Do I have to cover it in some way to protect from rain? Thanks Thanks for answering. Oh I see, of course, it has to have a pulse!! I am not sure if I can connect it with original box.

A) No you need a charger that causes the charge to pulse. A battery won't do that. Battery powered fence chargers don't work very well or last very long. You should get one that plugs in to the wall. They are much cheaper than battery powered chargers.

What are the red car registration plates for?

Q) I mainly see this on motorways either on the dashboard or at the rear of a car. Why is it there even when the car has it's own orginal registration plates?

A) They mean that the car is unregistered. Normally garages and dealers use them when they are test driving or delivering vehicles to customers.

Can anybody suggest a car comparable to a Volvo T4 in terms of performance and priced between 8-12K?

Q) I would prefer it if the cars suggested were not Suburu Impreza's or Mitsubishi Evo's as my father would be driving it and he is too mature for that bold a car. Also if they were not more than 5 years old.

A) dunno audi?

How do we stop a crow from attacking cars in the car park?

Q) A crow is attacking the windscreen wipers of cars in our car parks. It is a new building and it obviously nests next door to the car park. It sits on the bonnet and pulls at the windscreen wipers until they come off? Any safe, easy and generally acceptable measures for stopping this character? We would like to avoid anything that is going to lead to its demise!

A) Use the old farming technique - no not a scarecrow! Hang a few dead crows about the car park and your nuisence bird will soon get the message. Not sure of an ethical way of obtaining a few dead crows though, maybe that should be your next question.

What is mechanically the most simple car?

Q) I want to try and fix a broen car to working order. This will be my first car to 'do up' so I was wondering what the best car to start with?

A) I think that might be a matter of opinion, but the Volkswagen Beetle (the old bugs, not the new ones) get's my vote. Those are cars are incredibly simple....

What to do when a car repair shop do unauthorized repairs to your car and will not release it?

Q) I have been with out my car for more than 2.5 months the repair shop keep doing a miss and miss, cause to call it a hit and miss would be lying. To this day the car is not running. Now to release my car it will cost me over $600 for repairs I didn't tell them to make on my car. Since I have a new car I really don't care if it sits there for a lifetime, but can they sale my car parts without having title to the car? And I am responsible for the repair cost that I didn't authorized them to do? A) The business can put a chattel lean on your vehicle. If you are in the US; pay for the repairs with a check. (make sure there are sufficient funds in the account) On the check, note,:"paid under protest." Then file a civil suit in the county/parish where the business is located. That way you won't loose the vehicle and you can keep your credit in tact - and the Civil Court should be able to sort it out for you. Be sure to bring the cashed check, the original repair estimate, and any other evidence with you to court. You should also file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs, your state Attorney General, and the Better Business Bureau. http://monroelouisiana.businesscheck.org/complaint.htm http://www.ag.state.la.us/FileAComplaint/Form100-Complaint2.asp http://bbb.org/ Good luck!

My car got totalled in an accident, insurance company wants to buy it. How much will they pay me?

Q) I have a 1993 Nissan NX which was in a decent condition and never gave me any problems. Recently it got rear-ended. The other party's insurance took the responsibility and asked me to get an estimate. The estimate says the repair costs are about $5000 and the mechanic thinks the insurance company will buy the car from me. What price would they pay me for the car? I am a student and wasn't planning on buying a new car. What price should I be happy with. I paid about $2800 8 months ago for the car. Would they be willing to negotiate. If yes, how do I negotiate?

A) Most insurance companies use NADA to detmine the RETAIL value of your car, not Kelley Blue Book. This is because NADA is based on the actual selling prices of vehs, KBB is based on the ASKING prices of dealers for the same veh. KBB will therefore show a higher "value" for your veh. The value will take into account mileage on the veh, and the insurance company may adjust for prior dmg/condition. Most companies will give you more the veh if you have recently put in a new engine, transmission, or possible new paint job on entire veh. (You will need receipts for the same--and you will only recoup part of the cost of the refurbishments.) Also, the insurace company will take into account the salvage value of your veh--what a salvage yard would buy it for for parts--in deciding if the veh it totaled or not. They will calculate how much repairs are vs the "book" value (less salv value). You may be able to keep the veh (if you want, and depending on the laws in your state) & pay the add'l to have it repaired, but keep in mind that estimates may not include any "hidden" dmg to your veh, and the cost to repair may be higher than what's on the estimate. Also, the ins co would also reduce what they pay you by the salvage value if you keep the car, as the ins co would not be able to recoup the salvage amt by selling the car--you would be able to. The ins co will also ck to see if your veh previously had a salvage title issued on your veh--if it has, your settlement will be reduced...(and you got taken when you bought it...) You should not have a deductible taken from the settlement either if the other company is paying for the dmgs... Pls feel free to contact me personally if you would like further info...I am an auto claims adjuster for one of the top national insurance companies in the US.

What happens when a stolen car is purchased?

Q) I recently had my car stolen. It's a very hard thing to deal with especially since it's a very expensive car. It was a Mercedes Benz S550 and I had spent a little over $95 thousand on it. I live in Los Angeles and the LAPD have told me that there are so many car thefts that it's almost impossible to find stolen cars. Insurance covers the cars cost but what's important to me is that inside the car I had some family pictures and some of mother and fathers personal belongings that I'd like returned... Is there any chance the thief is stupid enough to try and sell the car?

A) With a high-end car like that, one of two things have most likely happened: 1. Sold to a chop shop and is now in pieces. 2. Exported to South America, Asia, or Eastern Europe where its lack of a title certificate is of no local concern. Cars like that aren't stolen by joy-riders unless the keys were left in it as it takes a professional thief to get past the anti-theft system. Any personal items in it were chucked in the dumpster. Sorry, but those are the cold, hard realities.

Trying to sell my car in Illinois but my car is registered in New York?

Q) I just moved from New York state to Illinois two months ago. However, my company plans me to move me to the office in California. I'm trying to sell my car in Illinois before I move to California and planning to buy a new or used car over there. I don't plan on changing my title, insurance, registration from NY to Illinois since I'm changing my car and live in California. How can I sell an out-of-state registered car?

A) You shouldn't have any problem selling it with a NY title. The person who is buying your car should just be able to take the NY title to the DMV to transfer ownership. It might just take a little longer for the paperwork to be done. You may want to check with the DMV in Illinois just to be sure, as motor vehicle laws do vary from state to state.

Suppose a car can accelerate at 1m/s2. How large a break in traffic is needed to enter a highway where cars?

Q) Suppose a car can accelerate at 1m/s2. How large a break in traffic is needed to enter a highway where cars are moving a 20m/s if the drive wants to avoid forcing the next car to slow down or to approach closer than 25m?

A) Assumptions: 1) The entering car is stopped 2) The entering car begins accelerating as soon as the rear bumper of the car it will fall in behind passes its front bumper. What distance does it take a car to accelerate from 0 to 20 m/s at a rate of 1m/s²? 1) Final velocity = initial velocity + acceleration * time 2) Distance = initial velocity * time + 1/2 acceleration * time² Plugging in the known values, the first equation becomes 20 m/s = 0 m/s + 1m/sec² * x x = 20 sec Now we can calcuate the second equation D = 0 m/s * 20 sec + 1/2 * 1 m/s² * (20 sec)² D = 0 m + 200 m If we need to keep a 25 m space behind us, that gets added to the necessary distance.

Does the car battery completely drain if the car is not used for 3 months?

Q) I will be out of town for about three months. I was wondering what to do with my car. Someone told me that the car battery will completely drain and I need to get a replacement when I come back. Any comments? BTW my car is 2000 toyota camry v6.

A) yes! you're batt will be drain if it been sitting for a long period of time, such as clock, theft system, and keep alive system modules. This are what you called parasitc draw,so just remove you're negative battery terminal. if you plan to remove it from the car do not lay it on the ground cause it wil depleted the battery.

What would cause a car to act strangely after leaving a car wash?

Q) My girlfriend has a 2002 Hyundai Accent with about 130,000 miles. We took it to a car wash. After leaving the car wash, the check engine light started flashing and the engine shook. After about 15 minutes the shaking stopped and the car drove normally again. This happened about 3 weeks ago and there have been no issues since then. What would cause her car to do this?

A) Ugh wetness on the ignition system.
